Groupe Clarins’ 1st-Qtr. Sales Rise

Groupe Clarins posted first-quarter 2008 sales of 240.1 million euros, or $359.6 million at average exchange, flat on the same prior-year period. At constant exchange, revenues rose 4.9 percent.

PARIS — Groupe Clarins posted first-quarter 2008 sales of 240.1 million euros, or $359.6 million at average exchange, flat on the same prior-year period. At constant exchange, revenues rose 4.9 percent.

The French firm’s beauty division registered sales of 168.9 million euros, or $253 million, up 1.1 percent or 6.6 percent at constant exchange. Its fragrance division generated revenues of 71.2 million euros, or $106.6 million, down 2.9 percent or up 1.2 percent at constant exchange.

By region, Clarins’ sales in Europe hit 155.3 million euros, or $232.6 million, down 3.1 percent or a decrease of 0.8 percent at constant exchange. Business in North America came in at 33.4 million euros, or $50 million, up 1.7 percent or 10.9 percent at constant exchange. Asia, meanwhile, rang up revenues of 28.1 million euros, or $42.1 million, a 4.5 percent gain or 16 percent increase at constant exchange. Other countries generated 23.3 million euros, or $34.9 million, up 14.3 percent or 25.6 percent at constant exchange.

Clarins maintained guidance for its existing brands’ sales growth of 4 to 6 percent at constant exchange in 2008.
