Guess Picks 2 Top Executives With Eye on Growth

Guess Inc. announced two new senior-level appointments on Tuesday that are intended to help boost the company's global reach.

LOS ANGELES — Guess Inc. announced two new senior-level appointments on Tuesday that are intended to help boost the company’s global reach.

Bonita Inza was named senior vice president of retail operations. She will be responsible for all store concepts in the U.S. and Canada. Inza was vice president of operations for all brands at Williams-Sonoma Inc. from 1992 to 2005.

Terence Tsang will be senior vice president, corporate business development, a new position. He will be responsible for long-range planning, special projects and international business development for key territories, including Asia and Latin America.

Tsang had worked as executive vice president at Ashworth Inc. since 2000. This is his second tour with Guess. His first was from 1992 to 1999. Tsang worked in several jobs, including vice president of finance, corporate controller and treasurer.

“The number-one reason for us to select [Inza] is her brand understanding, consistency and [ability to] focus on the relationship between the customer and company,” Paul Marciano, co-chairman and chief executive officer, said in an interview.

Marciano, who named Williams-Sonoma as one of his favorite companies, said the creation of Inza’s job indicates major strides for the company in the areas of personnel, management and expansion.

Tsang’s position is integral to Guess’ international growth strategy, particularly in Asia, Marciano said.

“We are building a large team internationally right now,” he said. “The brand is especially developing well in Europe, and Asia is the next big push.”

Earlier this month, the company bought back its European jeanswear license, and it hopes to add almost $100 million in revenue this year.

Marciano also said Guess is working on two possible ventures in Japan and China, but would not reveal further details other than to offer that Guess would handle all marketing, while the partners would be in charge of operations and human resources.

“We really want to control the brand, especially in Japan,” Marciano said.

The Los Angeles-based company announced this month that same-store sales for June increased 11 percent. For the second quarter ended July 2, total retail sales increased 14.1 percent to $132.9 million compared with $116.4 million for the second quarter of 2004. Comp-store sales increased 4.2 percent during the second quarter of 2005.

Guess Inc. operates 301 retail stores in the U.S. and Canada and distributes its products through better department and specialty stores around the world. The company is to open about 37 stores in 2005 and wants to open close to the same number in 2006, Marciano said.
