BERLIN — Beiersdorf AG, parent of brands including Nivea, Eucerin and La Prairie, said net profits in the first quarter rose 7.1 percent to 166 million euros, or $227.5 million.
EBIT, or earnings before interest and taxes, at the Hamburg-based firm were up 9.5 percent to 235 million euros, or $322 million in the three months to March 31.
Dollar figures are converted from the euro at average exchange rates for the period to which they refer.
Beiersdorf group sales for the period grew 1.2 percent to 1.6 billion euros, or $2.19 billion. On a like-for-like basis, revenues advanced 6.7 percent.
The company’s consumer products division advanced 0.4 percent to 1.32 billion euros, or $1.81 billion. Underlying revenues were up 6.3 percent.
Results were driven by robust performance in emerging markets, paired with a positive turnout in European markets, the company said. The strongest growth came from the Africa/Asia/Australia region, where underlying sales rose by 17.5 percent.
Quarterly sales for Nivea grew by 7.6 percent, Eucerin by 10.3 percent, and La Prairie by 3.4 percent.
Beiersdorf’s adhesives arm Tesa registered growth of 5.3 percent, with sales for the quarter rising to 273 million euros, or $374.1 million.
Beiersdorf also confirmed its fiscal year forecast, saying it anticipates growth of 4-6 percent for both group sales, and for its consumer products division, which it expects to outperform the market.
