Nordstrom Inches Closer to Manhattan

Retailer hires Madison Retail Group to explore sites.

Nordstrom moved one step closer to finding a Manhattan location by hiring the Madison Retail Group, a retail real estate consulting and brokerage firm. “We’d love to have a store in Manhattan,” Pete Nordstrom, president of merchandising for the Seattle-based Nordstrom chain, said in a statement Wednesday. “It’s been a goal of ours for a long time and we’re aggressively pursuing the right opportunity.”

The hiring of Madison Retail Group, formerly called Madison HGCD, is a sign that Nordstrom wants to be more methodical in its quest for a Manhattan flagship. The company has been exploring sites in different parts of the borough, including the Penn Station area by West 34th Street, Madison Avenue in the Fifties, lower Manhattan and the Columbus Circle vicinity, according to sources.

Madison Retail, based in New York City, will provide local expertise on demographics and shopping patterns and screen sites.
