PARIS — Stella Cadente is branching out.
The trendy French fashion label’s designer, Stanislassia Klein, has inked a deal with beauty giant Groupe Clarins and flatware producer Arc International Group here to form a new company, the firms announced Monday.
In the venture, also called Stella Cadente, ownership of the brand is split equally among the three, each of which also has a licensing agreement to run and develop Stella Cadente in its field of expertise. Klein — the designer in charge of all projects — remains head of the ready-to-wear collections and costume jewelry; Clarins will spearhead fragrance and makeup, and Arc is to focus on tableware and jewelry.
Other terms weren’t disclosed.
“The idea was to develop a completely different brand from those habitually found in the universe of luxury [goods],” said Klein, who said she linked up with Clarins and Arc because of the high level of competence they’ve shown in their respective domains.
Alongside fashion, beauty and tableware, “the three partners wish to give the brand the possibility to express itself in all the fields where it is legitimate,” Clarins said in a statement. “New licensing agreements will be signed with new partners, leaders in their field of activity.”
But first up for the new firm is the “Portafino” line of Stella Cadente crystal tableware, including whiskey and margarita glasses, plus crystal jewelry. It’s being rolled out currently in Cadente’s six markets — France, Italy, the U.K. and U.S., Russia and Japan — in which it has some 100 sales points.
In beauty, the first Stella Cadente items are slated to bow in 2005, said Klein, who added that she is at work on a project with Vera Strubi, chairwoman and managing director of Thierry Mugler, also owned by Clarins.
Stella Cadente was created in 1991 by Klein, who would not divulge sales figures. But industry sources estimate the brand generates $5 million in retail volume worldwide annually. Dollar figures are converted from euros at current exchange rates.
Arc, whose brands include Luminar, Salviati and Arcovoc, registered sales last year of $1.46 billion. And Clarins, which counts its signature label, Parfums Thierry Mugler and Parfums Azzaro among its beauty holdings, posted consolidated sales of $767.8 million last year.
