Target Corp. said on Thursday that it is opening 61 stores in 23 states on Sunday.

The states and the grand openings include: Alabama (2); Arizona (4); California (8); Colorado (2); Connecticut (1); Florida (7); Georgia (3); Illinois (2); Massachusetts (3); Michigan (1); Minnesota (5); Missouri (1); North Carolina (1); Nebraska (1); New Jersey (1); New York (1); Ohio (5); Pennsylvania (1); Tennessee (1); Texas (5); Virginia (3); Washington (2), and Wisconsin (1).

The company said that on Sunday, with the grand openings, Minneapolis-based Target will serve “guests” at 1,591 stores in 47 states nationwide. The discounter, which opened its first store in 1962, also said it gives back more than $3 million a week to its local communities through grants and special programs. The retailer also is involved in local volunteerism through Target Volunteers, which emphasizes its 44-year tradition of community involvement.
