NEW YORK — The Fragrance Foundation kicked off FiFi season with its annual finalists’ breakfast held at the Mandarin Oriental here Friday, where it gave out six of its FiFi awards.
The foundation recognized QVC as retailer of the year and Mane USA for Aquafina as Technological Breakthrough of the Year at the breakfast, which was hosted by WNBC 4 New York reporter and anchor Erika Tarantal.
Five awards were also given out for editorial excellence in fragrance coverage, including the addition of a new blogging category. Allure magazine took home a FiFi for Women’s Scent Feature while Elle magazine won two awards: Women’s Scent Bite (in the 250 to 500 word category) and Men’s Category for a December feature on men’s fragrance. Site Bois de Jasmin made FiFi history, walking away with the fragrance foundation’s first Blog award.
Fragrance Foundation president Rochelle Bloom, who helped commence the morning’s festivities, also noted a new award, the FiFi Perfume Extraordinaire, will recognize the aesthetic beauty of a fragrance, as well as its craftsmanship, design and quality. Bloom said the foundation would also recognize a corresponding perfumer or perfumers from the oil house that created the scent at the May 27 awards gala.
The breakfast also determined the final FiFi nominees in 16 remaining categories, including Fragrance of the Year finalists for Women’s Nouveau Niche for scents sold in 51 to 250 specialty store doors. They included Andy Warhol Union Square by Bond No. 9; David Yurman by Clarins Fragrance Group; Jo Malone’s Dark Amber & Ginger Lily; Love, Ralph Lauren, and Chloé Eau de Parfum by Coty Prestige.
Fragrance of the Year finalists for Men’s Nouveau Niche included Burberry the Beat for Men by P&G Prestige Products Inc., Clarin’s Fragrance Group’s The Essence by Porsche Design and Brooks Brothers NY Gentlemen Eau de Toilette by Inter Parfums USA, Sweet Lime & Cedar Cologne by Jo Malone and Cartier Roadster.
Due to a tie, six nominees are FiFi contenders in the women’s Fragrance of the Year Luxe category, including Estée Lauder’s Sensuous, Burberry the Beat by P&G Prestige Products Inc., as well as Harajuku Lovers Fragrances by Coty Prestige, Viva La Juicy from Juicy Couture by Elizabeth Arden, Absolutely Irresistible Givenchy and Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere Chanel. For the men’s Luxe category, Dior Homme Sport, Dolce & Gabbana the One for Men, Guerlain Homme, Sean John Fragrances I am King and Gucci by Gucci Pour Homme were nominated.
In the men’s and women’s Popular Appeal categories, there were nine nominees. Bijan VIP Men, Coty Inc.’s McGraw by Tim McGraw, as well as Mustang Blue for Men Fragrance and Samba Fresh Man were nominated for men’s. In the women’s category, Celine Dion Sensational, American Beauty Beloved, Bijan VIP woman, Hilary Duff’s Wrapped With Love and Samba Fresh Woman are FIFI contenders.
“My personal philosophy to beauty is paying attention to oneself. I love to be outdoors, lots of fresh air, trying to take care of yourself as best you can. I always notice that comes through,” says Felicity Jones, the global face of @shiseido-owned @cledepeaubeauteus, which launches today. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of @ralphlauren’s snowboarding collection, the brand is mining its archives. The iconic brand is reintroducing vintage styles and dropping new designs for a color capsule that will be available in Ralph Lauren stores and @openingceremony on January 25. For @rochasofficial’s pre-fall 2018 collection, creative director Alessandro Dell’Acqua channeled the sophisticated and intriguing Catherine Denevue in the film “Belle de Jour.” Polished collarless coats, midi skirts, suits and ’60s graphic motifs were all featured in the collection, adding a sense of discreet luxury. “We tried to produce clothing of that couture quality, but the most daunting part was that we only had a matter of days [to do it],” said costume designer Lou Eyrich, who recreated Gianni Versace’s iconic looks for @americancrimestoryfx. Harrods plans to remove the famous statue of Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed from the bottom of the Egyptian escalators and hand it back to Mohamed Al-Fayed. “We are very proud to have played our role in celebrating the lives of Diana, Princess of Wales and Dodi Al Fayed at Harrods and to have welcomed people from around the world to visit the memorial for the past 20 years,” said Michael Ward, Harrods managing director. “With the announcement of the new official memorial statue to Diana, Princess of Wales at Kensington Palace, we feel that the time is right to return this memorial to Mr. Al Fayed and for the public to be invited to pay their respects at the palace.” More on the news, with reporting by @loreleimarfil, at WWD.com. #wwdnews
