In 1953, Graham Wulff, a chemist and inventor, created the legendary beauty fluid Oil of Olay in the kitchen of his South African home. More than half a century later, his granddaughter, Tammy Frazer, working in her Cape Town atelier with 180-degree views of mountain and sea, blends pure botanical essences to create luxe organic perfumes. In creating her scents, branded as Frazer Parfum, the 30-year-old is unapologetically traditional. She uses organic essences, eschewing synthetics, chemicals and additives. “Our palette consists of rare absolutes, concentrates and resins coupled with petals, woods, roots, grass and zest,” she says. Indeed, a whiff of any of Frazer’s fragrances, from the sweet, warm and intoxicating Cassia to the bright yet aromatic Sambac Saffron, reveals the complexity of their composition and the artisanal approach to their creation. At the moment the brand is available at the Librisa Spa at the Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town, where prices range from $200 to $600 a bottle, and on a bespoke basis. In October, Frazer Parfum will launch at the Haute Parfumerie on Harrods’ fi fth fl oor in London, one of 20 brands handpicked by Roja Dove. Though her scents aren’t yet sold in the U.S., Frazer recently collaborated with the artist Heath Nash to create a candle that captures the odors of an African hut. Sold at the Amaridian Gallery in Manhattan, says Frazer, it “allows New Yorkers the ability to light the candle and be transported to Africa.”
