Hair rose to new heights at the Fall 2009 runway shows, with bold, textured styles designed to look anything but effortless. “For quite a while we’ve been seeing loose, easy-looking, minimal hair,” says Guido Palau, a star editorial and runway stylist and Redken creative consultant. “This season there was a return to doing hair, something more extravagant.”
Bouffants and pompadours in various permutations showed up on catwalks from New York to Paris, including Marc Jacobs, Moschino, Fendi and Louis Vuitton.

Says Neil Moodie, a leading stylist who works with Bumble and bumble and who created vintage-inspired pompadours at Nathan Jenden, this season exemplified a “backlash against the straightening-iron era. Hair has become fun again,” he says, crediting the current economic downturn for sparking the shift to more inspirational styles. “I did everything with my hands and fingers and pinned hair looser so it could be bigger.”
Part of the appeal lies, too, in the versatility of such styles. “There were different takes on the pompadour — the difference is the texture,” says Palau. “It could be rougher and more punky, or smoother, like at Louis Vuitton, which was luxe and feminine.”
Whatever the direction, the new attitude represents a return to femininity.“These are the hairstyles that inspired me when I was younger,” says Palau, “when people really used to do their hair and makeup.”
