Sarah Mills is upgrading. The British hairdresser — lauded for her killer men’s haircuts — has relocated, opening a 1,200-square-foot studio space in New York’s TriBeCa neighborhood. A former protégé of Vidal Sassoon and John Frieda, Mills was working out of her SoHo apartment for the last five years, but decided to trade up once her business began to grow.
“I used to be able to do clients out of my loft quietly and practice my yoga,” said Mills, an aficionado of the exercise form. “But then everything took off, and I simply needed more space.”
Mills is intent on keeping the new salon intimate and homey, much like her former studio. She installed three separate stations and plans on hiring a small staff so she can “come off the chair a bit” and focus on other aspects of the business, like starting a hair care line for men.
“Big salons are great for some people, but it’s not for me,” Mills said. “I think there is a need in New York for intimate spaces — service, quality and no ego.”
Mills designed the space with her friend Scott Newkirk, a fashion stylist who branched into interiors. The goal was to keep everything clean and peaceful, with burlap curtains, organic wood fixtures and neutral color palettes. Mills said she eventually wants the space to house art exhibitions and showcase new jewelry designers.
“I’m calling it a studio, but it’s more like an art space,” Mills said. “I think it would be great to have things constantly changing in here rather than having one space looking the same all of the time.”
