Hairstylists Aim for Retail Success — Again

Julien Farel, Michel Obadia and David Evangelista are launching product lines that hark back to J.F. Laartague's focus on a healthy scalp.

Three new stylist lines are heading to salon shelves, the airwaves and even specialty stores, as Julien Farel, Michel Obadia and David Evangelista launch their specially crafted versions of what they said will make hair look effortlessly healthy this year. Several focus on the Eighties catchphrase “pH-balanced” while another targets DNA to get hair thicker. All, however, hark back to J.F. Lazartigue’s focus on a healthy scalp, which is the root of healthy hair.

RepHair by Pierre Michel

Number of items: Four, plus daily capsules.

Aims to: RepHair looks to give hair a more youthful appearance by concentrating on one’s personal DNA.

Point of difference: With AC-11, RepHair looks to help to “restore hair, regenerate hair, and help to get it thicker. Not in three months, but right away,” said Michel Obadia, co-owner of Pierre Michel salon in Manhattan. Formulas are free of silicone, sulfates, parabens and petrochemicals. Updated from their previous formula, the new version now works on blondes. “The line is very simple and uncomplicated,” said Obadia. There is a shampoo, conditioner, a mask and a leave-in conditioner. One capsule is to be taken every day.

Prices and availability: Prices range from $28 to $35 and will be available at the salon and Web site mid-July.

Julien Farel Hair Care

Number of items: Twenty-two products targeting normal hair (Hydrate), colored and chemically treated hair (Vitamin), hard to control hair (Zero Frizz), as well as curly hair (Fusilli), limp hair (Volume) and skin items (Skin Moisture). There are also seven in-salon products.

Star product: Restore, Farel’s suds-free, detergent-free cleanser-and-conditioner-in-one aims to “bring hair back to its virgin state.” Applied similarly to at-home color — at the roots and then massaged into the rest of hair, followed by a rinse — Restore’s formula looks to leave hair shiny, manageable and free of frizz, too.

Point of Difference: By using moisturizing acid technology (MAT) scalp and hair are returned to a pH balance between 4.5 and 5.5 “regardless of where you are in the world, regardless of the water type,” said Farel, adding that MAT also “catches hair in its regrowth phase to prevent hair loss.” Manufactured by Monacelli in Umbria, Italy, the technology is exclusive to Farel.

Price and availability: $23 for shampoo, conditioner and styling items; $33 for Restore, $73 for a hydrating serum to correct hair-scalp problems, hair loss or dryness. Available at Farel’s two Manhattan salons and Web site. Seeking specialty store distribution.

David Evangelista

Number of items: Nine, including shampoo, conditioner, scrubbing shampoo, dry shampoo, conditioner, leave-in conditioner and styling items.

Point of difference: Items are made with peptides, antioxidants and emollients, “so it’s skin care for the hair,” said Evangelista, who on Wednesday launched his items on HSN. Evangelista’s shampoo products aim to return hair to pH-balanced levels. “It really regulates the scalp. Everything starts from there,” he said, adding, “My formulas are the lightest on the market.”
