He will take on the new role July 1 and will report to executive chairman Stefano Pessina, who, with private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., acquired Alliance Boots in 2007.
Hornby was chief executive of beleaguered bank HBOS before it was taken over by Lloyds TSB Group earlier this year. He also has a retail background, having held senior general management roles at supermarket chain ASDA, including a stint as managing director of its clothing business, George.
“Whilst the existing management structure will continue unchanged, his appointment will enable me to dedicate even more of my time and energy to the development and growth of Alliance Boots,” stated Pessina. “Andy’s wealth of retail and marketing experience will be an invaluable asset for the company, complementing our existing skills and expertise.”
Alliance Boots operates more than 3,200 health-and-beauty stores in nine countries.
