The award is given to “a unique and talented person” who makes their mark in fragrance, art or fashion, according to Angela Kohut, chairman of the society, and it was presented at an awards luncheon during the event.

In introducing Slatkin, who is president of home design for Limited Brands and president of Slatkin & Co., Linda Wells, editor in chief of Allure, underscored his contribution.

“Harry was instrumental in taking a fringe object hidden away in the home department of a department store,” she said, “and moving it front-and-center to the beauty department.”

Said Slatkin, “This is a humbling experience. It’s a great honor, although I always thought a legend award comes at the end of one’s career,” he said, adding, “But don’t count me out just yet, I still have a lot of sniffing left.”

He also thanked the perfumers in the crowd of roughly 250 people for “allowing me into the world [of fragrance] and teaching me and educating me.”

He paid tribute to his wife of 18 years, Laura Slatkin, who runs a private label home fragrance business that has 48 clients, including Godiva and Vera Wang. “Without her, there would have been no business.”

He added, “Laura, this award is to be shared 50-50 with you.”

Instead of giving out gift bags at the event, the companies in attendance, such as Robertet, Givaudan and Bath & Body Works donated $1,000 to the New York Center for Autism in recognition of Slatkin’s son, David, who is autistic.

Two other awards were given out during the luncheon, including the Lifetime Achievement Award, which was bestowed upon Ellen Molner, vice president and executive perfumer at Givaudan Fine Fragrances.

Additionally, Alice Rebeck, vice president of perfumery and Agilex Flavors & Fragrances received the William Lambert Award for her service to the society.
