Kate Betts’ Book Party

Her book may be all about Michelle Obama’s influence on the fashion industry, but Kate Betts’ clout was also evident in the eclectic crowd she pulled in for the party celebrating Everyday Icon: Michelle Obama and the Power of Style (Clarkson Potter). Fashion designers, beauty bigwigs, retailers and a bevy of socials toasted the book at the party, hosted by Desrée Rogers, chief executive officer of Johnson Publishing (formerly the White House social secretary), and Estée Lauder group president John Demsey.

Linda Marshall, president of Elysée Scientific Cosmetics, created the James E. Marshall OCD Foundation in honor of her late son, a victim of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Over the last seven years, more than $1.8 million has been raised at its annual fund-raiser. This year’s honorees were Givaudan’s Cos Policastro and Nancy Berger Cardone of Marie Claire. Providing the evening’s entertainment was Jennette McCurdy, star of iCarly and Linda Marshall’s cousin.

Tout le beauty industry turned out to hear two retail giants— Carmen Bauza of Wal-Mart and Muriel Gonzalez of Macy’s Inc. Bauza revealed that she and her team lived on $60 a month— the amount her average customer has to spend on consumables each month—to gain a better understanding of their spending dynamics, while Gonzalez highlighted some recent wins, like Macy’s innovative new Impulse beauty section.
