Few men would dare wear black wool shorts covered in a print of snarling Rottweilers, but when it comes to fashion, Fredric Brandt is fearless. Brandt, the dermatologist whose ability to melt away the years from one’s appearance has made him a celebrity favorite — he’s too discreet to name names, but let’s just say that Gwyneth Paltrow was the first guest on his SiriusXM radio show in October, and his name is often mentioned in the same breath as Madonna’s — is an avid clothing collector who is passionate about applying his well-developed aesthetic to what he puts on his body. Not for Brandt a white lab coat. Today, he’s wearing a Balmain jacket (current season), a smoky vinyl Alexander McQueen vest, a Burberry Prorsum shirt, Rick Owens motocross-inspired trousers and chunky white Prada shoes that look like a high-fashion, futuristic take on traditional nursing clogs.

“It makes me feel good to put certain things on,” says Brandt, who also bought a matching Rottweiler shirt at the Givenchy boutique in Paris, where he procured the shorts. “Fashion energizes me. It makes me feel like I’ve re-created myself that day and reflects my artistic sense.”
His favorite designers include Givenchy, Gareth Pugh, Alexandre Plokhov, Marc Jacobs, Balenciaga and Lanvin — an eclectic list for the self-professed edgy doctor.
“I like to be very unique,” he says. “I want the runway pieces that stores are afraid to buy.”
Brandt, who keeps full office hours and oversees an eponymous skin care brand with estimated retail sales of $50 million in the U.S., has also authored two books and recently launched a radio show. He shops mainly on the weekends (“I don’t have that much free time,” he laments), and is a man who knows his mind.
“I’m very fast and decisive,” he says. “I know right away if I like something.”
Though his collection is extensive, he prefers not to affix a cost to it.
“Oh my God,” he laughs, when asked how much he spends on clothes. “I’ve never added it up—I’d rather not know. But thank God I’m not a woman. I’d be bankrupt!”
Whatever the figure, it’s money well spent.
“I’m a very visual person,” says Brandt. “Fashion and style and art are visual mediums. You should put something on in the morning that reflects who you are and makes you happy, and that’s why I do it. It gives a new awareness to the day.”
