PARIS — Lancôme’s holiday color collection has a fashion focus, thanks to a collaboration with designer L’Wren Scott.
“The first thing I thought of was that I wanted to do my signature red — my bordeaux,” explained Scott, who worked with Lancôme’s artistic director for makeup, Aaron De Mey, on the capsule collection, which includes a red lipstick, lip gloss and nail polish, among other items.
Scott said she told Lancôme executives, “I would like to try to interpret a red lipstick that could be worn from day to night.” Proffering a makeup-stained hand from earlier demonstrations, she showed how the lipstick can look sheer or dark, depending on its application. “And when you put the gloss on, it takes on a whole other life,” said Scott.
Another step was lab visits. “I went with all my ammunition, which was my little fabric swatches and little car-paint swatches, for my nail colors,” said Scott. Gray, another of her key colors, is featured in products like an eye shadow quad, a nail polish (which was added to the line after being well received during her fall fashion show) and Hypnôse Drama mascara.
The holiday color collection by L’Wren Scott for Lancôme marks her first major move into makeup. Before, she had just mixed her own hues at home and ventured into nail color factories. “I used to go there for color inspiration, but I’ve never made colors other than for my own fabrics,” said Scott. She worked with Mario Testino on the advertisement for the holiday collection, which stars Daria Werbowy in a L’Wren Scott dress. She designed a feather rose brooch and a pochette as gifts with purchase, as well. So what surprised Scott most in makeup creation? “It was the process of working with the technicians and seeing how it was to articulate color in makeup versus fabrics,” she said.
The L’Wren for Lancôme line will be launched internationally in November. The nail polish will sell in the U.S. for $14.50; the lipstick and the gloss, $29 each; the eye quad palette, $42, and the mascara, $24.50.
