Yves Saint Laurent’s fashion business may have garnered the public-relations spotlight this year as newly appointed designer Hedi Slimane unveiled his transformative plans for the brand, but it was the beauty business that really shone. The brand went from strength to strength, backed by hard-hitting launches in the makeup, skin-care and fragrance segments. Its Rouge Pur Couture Vernis à Lèvres was a game-changer, creating a new lip-product segment that’s a mix of lipstick, gloss and stain, and kicked off an industry trend for hybrid products. Also on the makeup front, 20 years after introducing its blockbuster Touche Eclat Radiant Touch, the L’Oréal-run brand launched a related foundation, Le Teint Touche Eclat. In treatment, YSL debuted Forever Youth Liberator, a line based on the cut- ting-edge science of glycobiology. In fragrance, there was Manifesto, which is billed to be a declaration of contemporary femininity and designed to become a second pillar worldwide, beside Opium. Actress Jessica Chastain was tapped to be ambassador for the project, starring in the film advertisement lensed by Nicolas Winding Refn and the still campaign photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. The future, it seems, couldn’t be brighter.
