What’s in Brendalin’s Bag?
Convenience brought Brendalin Stempel to Clyde’s on Madison. The 71-year-old lives around the block from the beauty boutique and pharmacy and needed to restock some of her skin-care and makeup essentials. “I look for [products] that I can easily obtain,” says Stempel. “I travel a lot and I need to have a known brand so that whatever country I’m in I can restock. Also, I look for products without additives and items that are reasonably priced.” The interior designer, who spends $2,500 annually on beauty, is drawn into a store based on the decor, but admits she doesn’t like shopping for beauty and keeps her routine very minimal. “I put my makeup on in the morning and I take lipstick, a brush and some perfume,” she says. [Beauty] is a necessity for me. Not a pleasure.”

What’s in Dawn’s Bag?
Dawn Mai brought along her sister to Space NK in Bloomingdale’s SoHo to introduce her to her favorite skin-care line, Eve Lom. “I’m actually not that brand loyal,” says Mai, “but this really works for my skin.” The 32-year-old graduate student, who spends about $1,500 a year on beauty, relies on word-of-mouth for product recommendations. “Word-of-mouth works better than reading reviews in a magazine,” says Mai. “Your friends know you better and magazines tend to promote products from their perspective.” Mai usually purchases her products in-store, but she just began to buy items online. “It’s really convenient to purchase on the web,” says Mai. “It seems like delivery has really improved from years past.” When asked why she likes shopping for beauty, she responded, “I like the smell. Something about it calms me. You don’t get that when you go into a bookstore or clothing store.”
