MILAN — Construction on Giorgio Armani’s hotel here is under way and the scaffolding put up to cover the works provides an idea of what the hotel will look like, with a rendering replicating the facade, also designed by Armani.

Slated to be unveiled in 2010, the hotel is positioned above the designer’s megastore in Via Manzoni, in a building dating back to 1937 and originally designed by Venetian architect Enrico Agostino Griffini. “I feel a very special involvement in the project for the Armani Hotel Milano, as it is located here in my hometown,” said the designer. “Every aspect of the hotel is a reflection of my aesthetic philosophy, and its position, above the Manzoni 31 concept store, will offer my guests the chance to experience a complete Armani lifestyle.”
The designer said he felt his design will “fit the spirit of Milan as a capital of style, whilst offering a new experience of hospitality within its fashion district.” Located near the fashion shopping streets Via Montenapoleone, Via Spiga and Via Sant’Andrea, Armani’s megastore has helped raise the profile of Via Manzoni, marked at the end by the renowned La Scala theater and the nearby Cathedral.
The Armani Hotel Milano will cover floors two to eight of the existing building. In addition to its 95 guest rooms and suites, the hotel will house a business center, a restaurant, a lounge bar, a spa and wellness facilities. The first two floors and the basement will continue to house the existing Armani/Via Manzoni 31 retail area, which comprise the Emporio Armani, Armani Jeans, Armani/Casa, Armani/Fiori and Armani/Dolci brands and the Emporio Armani Café Armani/Nobu restaurant. The stores and restaurants will function regularly throughout the construction of the hotel.
The Armani Hotels and Residences project was established in 2005 in collaboration with Dubai-based real estate giant Emaar Properties. The first hotel and residences will be unveiled in Burj Dubai in the last quarter of next year. A company spokesman said average prices for the residences are set at around 30,000 euros, or $37,800 at current exchange, a square meter. The second Armani Residences venture, consisting of beachfront villas, is being built in Marassi, Emaar’s flagship resort development in Egypt on the Sidi Abdel Rahman Bay facing the Mediterranean Sea.
