DALLAS — Thanksgiving will be a little sweeter for some victims of Hurricane Sandy, thanks to the Dallas Market Center and Royers Round Top Cafe, which have linked to serve 5,000 slices of gourmet pie to hard-hit areas in New York and New Jersey.
“The pies are just a genuine gesture from the heart for the holidays,” said Bill Winsor, president and chief executive officer of the Dallas Market Center. “We have so many tenants who were affected in New York and New Jersey, and we’ve been talking about what we can do to help. So when Bud Royer called and said he needed an underwriter to help get these pies up there, I said count us in.”
Royers is one of those inimitable Texas gems, a 38-seat café that’s earned national accolades despite its rural location in a town of 90 midway between Austin and Houston. Winsor has a ranch near Round Top, so he and the café owner go way back.
The companies are also collecting donations so they can hand out $25 gift cards for home improvement and general merchandise retailers.
Tara Royer Steele, whose title at her parents’ café is “pie queen,” explained that her father plans to give away 650 pies at five to seven locations that will be determined by need.
“It’ll be an assortment of chocolate chip, original buttermilk, buttermilk delight and pumpkin pies,” Steele explained. “We’ll have them there by Thanksgiving.”
