AMWAY CASE: A British court is weighing up Amway's trading future in the U.K., seeking to cease the direct seller's operations here, which includes the sale of cosmetics, health supplements and other items through independent agents. The hearing, which kicked off in the Companies Court on Monday, follows a government investigation into its U.K. business. According to the government's case, Amway has suggested that substantial rewards could be earned by becoming a company sales agent, whereas the investigation claims the majority of agents make minimal financial returns. An Amway spokesman said the company has made changes to its business model over the past year to address the issues raised by the government. "In no way do we accept that the arguments the U.K. government put forward should lead to the company being shut down in the U.K.," he said. The hearing is expected to continue for up to four weeks.
MAC MOVES: MAC Cosmetics has promoted Sandra Main to senior vice president and general manager for MAC International. The Estée Lauder Cos. Inc.-owned brand also has promoted Nancy Mahon to senior vice president and executive director of the MAC AIDS Fund. Main was most recently general manager of MAC International, a position she took in 2004. Since that time, MAC's international business has grown by 23 percent and has expanded into 18 new markets including China and India. Main joined MAC in 1995 as brand manager in Hong Kong. Mahon joined the MAC AIDS Fund in June 2005 and, in 2006, she oversaw $16 million in donations to HIV/AIDS charities. Prior to joining MAC, Mahon was executive director of God's Love We Deliver and a senior program director at the Open Society Institute.
TEEN SCENT: Natural teen skin care brand Young & Pure is coming of age. Earlier this month, the two-year-old British treatment line introduced its first fragrance, dubbed Samanda by Young & Pure. The scent is sold in supermarkets, as well as Superdrug and The Perfume Shop doors in the U.K., in addition to the eight-unit treatment brand's retail network of health food stores. The eau de parfum is fronted by 19-year-old twins and U.K. reality television celebrities Sam and Amanda Marchant, who go by the moniker "Samanda." The juice, which was concocted by Tracy Turner of Northampton-based Plantain, comprises notes of lemon, magnolia, watermelon and vanilla. Featuring an image of the identical twins on its packaging, the scent retails at 14.95 pounds, or $30.86 at current exchange, per 50-ml. spray. Young & Pure founder Lianne Miller plans to add an organic line and a collection for males to the brand's lineup next year.
