Wal-Mart Stores Inc. isn’t giving up on its Made in America pledge, and on Thursday will host a U.S. Manufacturing Summit at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla.
The retail giant in January committed to sourcing $50 billion worth of goods in the U.S. over the next 10 years. It continues to appeal to other retailers to participate as it tries to line up support from businesses across a variety of industries, and reaches out to the federal and state governments. The blueprint is similar to other Wal-Mart initiatives such as the sustainable index the retailer introduced in 2009. Wal-Mart created a coalition between retailers, manufacturers, government, nonprofit organizations and academia for the index, which measures key performance indicators and category-specific metrics to evaluate a retailer’s performance and supply chain performance.
On Thursday, Wal-Mart Stores president and chief executive officer Mike Duke, Wal-Mart U.S. ceo Bill Simon, Sam’s Club ceo Rosalind Brewer and executive vice president and chief merchandising and marketing officer Duncan Mac Naughton, will be joined by such business leaders as General Electric chairman and ceo Jeff Immelt and Kayser-Roth president and ceo Kevin Toomey; Penny Pritzker, U.S. Secretary of Commerce, and Richard Fisher, president and ceo of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, as well as the governors of eight states.
Wal-Mart will convene some 1,500 people at its summit, which “will build on Wal-Mart’s commitment to drive more American manufacturing as an industry,” the Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer said.

“I am of tradition, but that doesn’t mean I have an old outlook on life,” Hubert de Givenchy told WWD in an interview in 1978. The legendary designer, who died last week at the age of 91, achieved wide success soon after launching his own couture boutique in the early ’50s, but he refused to pine for that time. For the first time since its original publication, read our interview with Givenchy on his awe for Audrey Hepburn and looking forward. Link in bio. #wwdarchives #fbf (📷: Pierre Schermann)
About last night: @alexachung and @supergausa toasted the launch of their capsule collection. “It’s the shape that I love, so rather than amend the last and make the sole crazy or do anything wild, we just did really subtle additions that I think make it look really luxe-y,” said Chung. #wwdfashion (📷: Marc Patrick)
