Akris customers appear to be bucking the ailing economy, ringing up $1 million in sales during a three-day fall trunk show last week at Bergdorf Goodman.

On the first day, May 13, Akris broke Bergdorf’s record for the most actual sales in a single day by a designer. Instead of ordering select items, Akris fans were buying sheath dresses in cashmere and silk jersey for $2,990, as well as double-faced wool and cashmere suits. But the latter offered versatility: Jackets, tunics, pants and skirts were among the combinations offered. The suits were a $6,000 purchase, excluding the tunic.
More relaxed styles, such as the 8-gauge cashmere wrap cardigan retailing at $2,990 with various fine-gauge underpinnings at $895, and a cashmere sweater with an architecturally graphic pattern, were also popular. Pants, especially high-waisted styles and ones with full legs, were also winners with shoppers.
Linda Fargo, Bergdorf’s senior vice president of fashion office and store presentation, said, “Akris is investment dressing, which suits the current financial climate very well. These pieces never feel frivolous, but rather lend themselves to true wardrobe building.”
Jim Gold, president and chief executive officer of Bergdorf Goodman, said, “Last week’s record-breaking trunk show is an exciting and positive start to the fall season.”
Based in St. Gallen, Switzerland, Akris made its debut at Bergdorf’s in 1988. The collection is currently displayed in a 1,500-square-foot shop on the store’s fourth floor and has evolved into one of the retailer’s leading collections.
Fargo said, “Albert Kriemler is a treasured and integral member of the Bergdorf family of design talent. It’s a true partnership. It’s no accident that the recent selling event exceeded the mark.”
Globally, Akris has 500 points of distribution, including freestanding stores, in Switzerland, France, Germany, the U.K., Austria, Monaco, South Korea and Japan. Stateside, the label has stores on Madison Avenue in New York and on Newbury Street in Boston.
