NEW YORK — Apparel is riding a back-to-school wave online.

Five of the 10 e-commerce sites realizing the steepest surges in traffic among at-home users, for the week ended Aug. 3, sell apparel: smartbargains, Old Navy, ABC Distributing, iWon, and Victoria’s Secret. Three are discount or low-price e-tailers, with Victoria’s Secret and ABC the exceptions.

“Consumers continue to be value-driven and look for deals and discounts online,” observed Abha Bhagat, senior Internet analyst at Web ratings agency Nielsen/NetRatings.

A check Monday of the heavily trafficked apparel sites found denim promoted on Old Navy’s home page for $10-$24.50, reduced from $12.50-$32.50, and 38 percent discounts at smartbargains’ landing pad for Burberry plaid lambswool scarves, now a scant $59.99.

Ranked by rate of growth, smartbargains led the top 10, with traffic up 209 percent from users at home to 1.04 million visitors for the week ended Aug. 3, up from 337,000 one week earlier. It was followed by OldNavy, up 107 percent, with 614,000 shoppers versus 297,000. ABC Distributing ranked fourth and was up 83 percent with 346,000 shoppers, from 189,000; iWon was fifth and up 61 percent, luring 290,000 visitors, compared to 180,000. Victoria’s Secret placed 10th, growing 36 percent to 359,000 shoppers from 264,000.

Rounding out the top 10 traffic gainers were electronics merchant, placing third, and the e-tail sites of Scholastic, Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club and Bed, Bath & Beyond, ranking sixth through ninth, respectively.
