BERLIN — Beiersdorf AG has a new research-and-production center in Silao, Mexico, which is expected to help markedly boost business in the region, the company said.

The Hamburg-based consumer-goods giant inaugurated the plant on July 18. It produces creams, lotions, lip balms and bath-care products under the brands Nivea, Eucerin and Labello, destined for distribution in Mexico, Central America, and North America.

The center has an innovation division and is energy efficient, with environmentally friendly processes and facilities. It has 350 employees, a number which will increase to around 600 by year-end.
The facility is expected to produce 280 million cosmetics products annually, making it Beiersdorf’s second-largest global production center after Hamburg.

In 2013, Latin America was one of the firm’s top-three markets. There, its consumer sales last year declined 9.6 percent 616 million euros, or $818 million at average yearly exchange, due to currency fluctuations. On an organic basis, the region’s consumer sales rose 11.4 percent.
