European markets closed slightly up on Monday night as European finance ministers gathered in Brussels for their first meeting of the year.

LONDON — European markets closed slightly up on Monday night as European finance ministers gathered in Brussels for their first meeting of the year.

The FTSE 100 in London was ahead 0.8 percent to 6,180.98, while the CAC 40 in Paris and the DAX in Frankfurt were both up 0.6 percent to 3,763.03 and 7,748.86, respectively. The FTSE MIB in Milan grew 0.4 percent to 17,631.99.

The pound was trading at $1.59 against the dollar, while the euro was at $1.33 and the Swiss franc fetched $1.07.

Retail and luxury stocks put on a mixed show, with the day’s biggest growers including Mulberry, up 3.7 percent to 12.96 pounds; L’Oréal, 1.5 percent to 109.55 euros; and Yoox, 1.2 percent to 13.10 euros.

Among the stocks losing ground were Asos.com, down 2.4 percent to 25.94 pounds; Burberry, 1.4 percent to 13.67 pounds; shares in Compagnie Financière Richemont closed down 5.6 percent at 74.30 Swiss francs, after the company reported single digit sales growth in the third quarter — which fell short of analysts’ expectations — and said that sales in Asia were flat at constant currency.
