PARIS -- Consolidated turnover for the Galeries Lafayette group, which includes the French department store chain as well as the Monoprix and Uniprix variety stores and the BHV department store in Paris, fell 7.2 percent in 1993, to $4.9 billion (29.04 billion francs) at current exchange rates.

A spokesman for the group, however, pointed out that the latest figures are not directly comparable with 1992 because of the sale of the discount textile chain Vetland as well as several other stores.

Retail sales of the group, excluding tax, fell 7.4 percent to $4.3 billion (25.7 billion francs).

At the Galeries Lafayette flagship on the Boulevard Haussmann in Paris, sales last year, excluding tax, were up 0.5 percent to $472.4 million (2.8 billion francs).
