NEW YORK — Avon Products has tapped former AOL executive Charles M. Herington to fill the post of senior vice president, Latin America. Herington replaces Amilcar Melendez, who retires this month after a 37-year career with Avon.

Herington, who previously served as president and chief executive officer of AOL Latin America, has worked in the region for 25 years. He is credited with launching AOL in Latin America and had served as ceo since 1999, following a brief stint as president of Revlon Latin America.

Herington's experience also includes various positions at PepsiCo Restaurants International and the Procter & Gamble Co.

"[Herington's] proven expertise in Latin America, coupled with his experience working with four major global consumer companies, will be important assets as we implement our growth strategies in our large and dynamic Latin American region," said Avon's chairman and ceo Andrea Jung in a statement. Herington also serves on the boards of ADVO, a direct marketing company, Molson-Coors and NII Holdings (formerly Nextel International).
