• H&M SALES RISE: Hennes & Mauritz on Friday said July sales in local currencies, including value-added tax, rose by 15 percent from a year ago. However, comparable units at stores, Internet and catalogue sales in countries where business has been conducted for at least a year were down by 3 percent. The Swedish firm operated 1,601 stores as of July 31, compared with 1,422 a year ago.

•PENNEY’S ENERGY SAVERS: J.C. Penney Co. Inc. plans to harness solar and wind energy for 10 stores and a distribution center in Reno. The pilot project will include California stores in El Cajon, Palmdale, Redlands and Santa Clarita, and New Jersey units in Cherry Hill, Deptford, East Brunswick, Freehold, Wayne and Woodbridge. The installations are expected to be completed by November.
