GREEN SCREEN: PPR, the French retail conglomerate that owns Gucci Group, looks set to give Al Gore a bit of competition in the environmental movie department. PPR on Monday said it was partnering with French producer and director Luc Besson and photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand to produce a film about the delicate state of the environment. With a working title of “Boomerang,” the film is expected to premier June 5, 2009, the World Day of the Environment, to help people understand the “emergency state of our planet.” Arthus-Bertrand, well known for his picture books of the earth snapped from above, will provide images for the film, which will travel to more than 50 countries around the world and be accompanied with a voice-over narrating the “social and environmental issues” facing the planet. “The issues are too important to ignore,” said Fran?ois-Henri Pinault, president and chief executive of PPR. “We have a responsibility to educate and act.” Benefits of the film will got to

FERRE’S NEW LICENSE: As part of its reorganization program, Gianfranco Ferr? has signed a five-year licensing agreement with Via Mazzini Srl, an Italian manufacturer, to produce and distribute the brand’s innerwear and swimwear starting with spring 2008. Via Mazzini is based in Cairate, about an hour north of Milan, and has been active in the innerwear business for 30 years. Ferr? last had a lingerie license many years ago, before it was bought by IT Holding SpA.

MODELL’S HIRES HOROWITZ: Modell’s Sporting Goods has hired Seth Horowitz, former chief executive officer of Everlast Worldwide Inc., as executive vice president of merchandise, advertising, marketing, planning and allocation, a new role. Horowitz left Everlast in November after it was acquired by Brands Holdings Ltd. Based in New York, Horowitz reports to Mitchell Modell, president and ceo of the 136-door retailer.
