- MEDAL CONTENDER: Valérie Hermann is making room on her mantelpiece for yet another accolade. The Yves Saint Laurent boss jetted to Courchevel, the French Alps ski resort, last weekend for the annual Les Femmes en Or (Women in Gold) gala where she picked up a trophy for her achievements in business. In July, she received a chevalier medal, one of France's highest honors. - YARN PRODUCTION GAINS: Global yarn production rose 1.7 percent in the second quarter of 2007, because of higher output in North America, Europe and Asia, according to a report from the International Textile Manufacturers Federation. The Zurich-based ITMF, an umbrella group for national textile associations in more than 30 major textile nations, said production increased 10.2 percent in North America, 2.7 percent in Europe and 0.9 percent in Asia, but declined 4.6 percent in South America. In the same period, global fabric production posted an increase of 2.6 percent, with Europe, Asia and South America registering increases of 0.1 percent, 1.9 percent and 11.4 percent, respectively. Output in North America fell 1.3 percent, the ITMF noted. Global yarn stock levels were up 2.4 percent and reached the highest level in the past three years, while world fabric inventories advanced in the second quarter 0.2 percent.
- KATHRYN CONOVER HIRE: Dress label Kathryn Conover has tapped Tony Brown as vice president of sales and creative director. Most recently national sales manager for Max & Cleo, Brown has worked in sales for Ralph Lauren, Sean John, Laundry, Donna Ricco and Gillian. Based in New York, Brown reports to Marty Pitiger, president of the Ronni Nicole Group, Kathryn Conover's parent company.
- STYLE GRAB: The first fashion social networking site, StyleDiary of Los Angeles, has been acquired by social shopping and book marketing site Stylehive of San Francisco for an undisclosed amount of cash and stock. The sites will continue to develop separately and make use of each other's features. StyleDiary founder Patricia Handschiegel will join Stylehive as its West Coast bureau chief, working on a mix of fashion content and community development. StyleDiary co-owner and chief technology officer Will Kapke will support the site through the transition but will not stay. StyleDiary lets users from around the world post profiles and photos of their outfits every day. Stylehive allows users to bookmark stylish objects they see online and share them with friends.

@americanapparelusa is relaunching the brand outside of the U.S. today, opening its online store to more than 200 countries.
