TOKYO — Same-store sales in Japanese department stores dropped 9.1 percent in January, registering their 11th consecutive month of decline.

The Japan Department Stores Association said Thursday that sales slumped to 613.1 billion yen, or $6.8 billion at current exchange.

Slow sales of heavy winter clothing bit into business at the country’s 279 department stores, the organization said. More specifically, apparel sales dropped 11.9 percent to 269.7 billion yen, or $3.0 billion.

In Tokyo, department store sales fell 9.6 percent to 148.0 billion yen, or $1.6 billion.
