Japan Retailers Post Mixed July Sales

Warm weather and seasonal clearance events spurred sales of summer items.

TOKYO — Japanese retailers posted mixed sales in July, as warm weather and seasonal clearance events spurred sales of summer items.

Fast Retailing said Friday that same-store sales at its Uniqlo outlets in Japan grew 5.5 percent on the same month last year.
 
“Same-store sales proved strong in July thanks to favorable seasonal weather and buoyant sales of summer garments,” the company said.
 
Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings said that sales at its nine main Japan locations increased by 1.6 percent in July, marking the sixth straight month of year-on-year sales growth for the retailer. The company said that its biannual clearance sale helped to increase both revenue and customer numbers.

H2O Retailing, which operates the Hankyu and Hanshin department store chains, said its sales grew 9.7 percent last month. Much of this growth came from the Hankyu flagship store in the western city of Osaka, which was remodeled and expanded last fall.
 
Other retailers didn’t fare as well. Takashimaya said that sales at its 18 department stores in Japan dropped 3.9 percent compared with July of last year. Only one individual store experienced sales growth. The company attributed the drop to one less Sunday in the month compared to the year before, and a clearance sale that started on June 28, as opposed to July 1 last year.
 
Sales at J. Front Retailing’s Daimaru and Matsuzakaya department stores fell 0.9 percent in July. However, when looking at June and July together, the company said it saw year-on-year sales growth of 3.6 percent.
