Japanese Retailers’ Nov. Sales Grow

Colder temperatures in the second half of the month drove customers indoors to shop for winter clothing and accessories.

TOKYO Japanese retailers’ sales grew in November, as colder than usual temperatures in the second half of the month drove customers indoors to shop for winter clothing and accessories.
 
Fast Retailing said Tuesday that same-store sales at its 837 Uniqlo stores in Japan increased by 7.7 percent compared with the same month last year.
 
“Same-store sales rose year on year in November with the colder weather from mid-month boosting sales of our featured winter ranges,” the company said.
 
Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings, Japan’s largest department store group, said sales at its nine main stores rose 6.8 percent on the year. The Shinjuku Isetan flagship and Ginza Mitsukoshi stores, both in Tokyo, showed particularly strong performance, with sales growth of 14.6 and 11.9 percent respectively.
 
Sales at Takashimaya’s 18 department stores in Japan were also up in November, rising 3.1 percent. Like Isetan Mitsukoshi, Takashimaya’s biggest increase came from Tokyo, at its Nihonbashi and Shinjuku stores. In terms of product, Takashimaya said that winter clothing, big-ticket items, and foods sold particularly well.
 
H2O Retailing said that sales at its Hankyu and Hanshin department stores increased 1.7 percent in November. This is the smallest sales for the group in the past year, as large jumps in previous months stemmed from the renovation and expansion of its Hankyu Umeda flagship, which reopened last November.
 
J. Front Retailing’s department store business, which is comprised of the Daimaru and Matsuzakaya chains, saw same-store sales rise 4.4 percent in November. The company said that winter clothes and accessories for women, such as wool coats, cashmere scarves and boots, sold well, along with luxury goods, art, watches and fine jewelry.
