London’s FTSE 100 Edges Up

Fashion and retail stocks were uneven in the morning's trading.

LONDON — London’s FTSE 100 headed up in mid-morning trading Thursday, rising 0.3 percent to 6,798.00. The rest of Europe’s major markets were closed for public holidays.
 
Earlier Thursday, the Nikkei 225 in Tokyo had closed up 1.3 percent to 14,485.13.
 
Fashion, luxury and retail stocks had a varied morning.
 
On an upswing were stocks including French Connection, which climbed 4.8 percent to 0.79 pounds; Marks & Spencer, up 0.3 percent to 4.42 pounds; Boohoo.com, which rose 1.8 percent to 0.54 pounds and Mulberry, which gained 1.9 percent to 6.88 pounds.
 
Those that lost ground numbered Prada, which closed down 0.2 percent to 61.90 Hong Kong dollars; Koovs, which dipped 4.8 percent to 1.59 pounds and Gemfields, down 2.5 percent to 0.39 pounds.
 
At 12.00 CET, the pound traded for $1.68 against the dollar, while the euro went for $1.38 and the Hong Kong dollar for $0.13.
