Despite recent store closings, the global department store segment remains a robust business.

In an analysis of data from the S&P, the top 275 public retailers classified by the S&P as a “department store” have aggregate annual sales of $37.1 billion. The segment’s collective market capitalization totals $201.4 billion.

The top 25 stores in the study is an eclectic mix of traditional department stores, retail innovators and some of the oldest chains in the industry.

Mexico’s Liverpool takes the number-one spot with $16.7 billion in market cap. Like others on the list such as Japan’s H2O, the company is more diversified in its business than traditional chains as it engages in real estate and commercial property deals. S.A.C.I. Falabella came in at number two with $15.2 billion in market cap. This South American retailer is also diversified, and has tentacles in the home improvement, telecom and travel industries. In third with $13.9 billion in market capitalization is Next Plc. This chain, based in the U.K., was founded in 1864. In the fourth spot is Macy’s Inc. with $12.2 billion in market cap.

The S&P classification of “department stores” has the segment fall under the “consumer discretionary” sector, which includes other segments such as “apparel retailing” (where a company such as Fast Retailing would be listed) and “general merchandise” (where Target Corp. is listed). Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is listed under “hypermarkets and supermarkets.”
