NEW YORK -- Chic By HIS reported second-quarter earnings rose 18.6 percent, to $2.2 million, or 23 cents a share, from $1.9 million, or 21 cents, before a $3.1 million charge a year ago.

After the special charge for prepayment of debt, the company lost $1.2 million.

Sales gained 12.5 percent, to $88.2 million from $78.4 million.

For the six months ended May 7, earnings totaled $2.9 million, or 30 cents, from $220,000, or 5 cents, before a $2.8 million charge in 1993.

After the charge for early extinguishment of debt offset in part by a credit for tax loss carryforward, the firm lost $2.6 million in the 1993 period.

Sales advanced 13.2 percent, to $164.8 million from $145.6 million.

Chic manufactures women's and girl's denim jeans and casual pants under the Chic name and men's and boy's jeans and pants under the HIS brand. The company also licenses its Chic trademark for women's sportswear, intimate apparel, accessories, hosiery and footwear.
