TOKYO–Fast Retailing Co. said Friday that comps at its Uniqlo stores in Japan increased 4.6 percent in April, compared to the same month last year. The company attributed the rise to steady performance of summer items, which were given a further boost due to warm weather in Japan in the second half of the month.
“Items offered as part of this season’s campaigns performed especially well,” the company said in a release.
The sales increase is the latest indication that retailers in Japan are getting back to normal after business was greatly disrupted by the massive earthquake and tsunami that hit the eastern part of the country on March 11. Last month Fast Retailing reported that its same-store sales for March had slipped 10.5 percent.
After closing 6 locations and opening 20 in the month of April, the company currently operates 823 stores in Japan.
