TOKYO—Uniqlo’s same-store sales in March rose 7.9 percent, as Japanese consumers snapped up spring items like parkas and colored jeans.

This is the fifth consecutive month of comps growth for Uniqlo. The chain’s parent company Fast Retailing Co. Ltd. said Thursday that same-store consumer traffic was up 8.7 percent although average spending per consumer declined 0.7 percent.

The company blamed the drop on a decision to sell more low-priced spring items in March than it did the same month last year. Sales of Uniqlo’s affordable basic clothing have been thriving in recessionary Japan as higher-end retailers and luxury goods makers suffer.

Last month Uniqlo tapped German designer Jil Sander as a design consultant overseeing the brand’s men’s and women’s apparel collections. The first collections bearing her signature will bow for fall/winter.

The same-store figures exclude Uniqlo’s operations outside Japan. Uniqlo is in the process of broadening its international presence. Next week it will open its first store in Singapore, joining its network of stores in New York, Paris, Hong Kong and China.

Fast Retailing will release its first half results April 9.
