China Seizes Over 12,000 Counterfeits

The Shanghai government coordinated a series of raids on Shanghai's most famous fake markets.

SHANGHAI—More than 12,000 counterfeit products were seized during a coordinated series of raids on Shanghai’s most famous fake markets, according to government information released Sunday.

Posts on the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government’s Weibo (China’s Twitter-like microblog) account claimed that officials from the Shanghai Administration for Industry and Commerce were acting on several tip-offs when they found more than 400 counterfeit Burberry scarfs and ties at the city’s popular fabric market, the Shanghai South Bund Soft-Spinning Material Market.

In downtown Shanghai, Nanjing West Road’s most infamous fake market, stretching four floors high and known colloquially by its street number“580,”was also raided, with officials netting 5,736 fake products claiming to be from brands like Chanel, Longchamp, Ugg and Disney.

At a mobile phone market near Shanghai Railway station, 1,263 counterfeit Samsung components were seized, while on the outskirts of the city, a raid on a factory in Minhang District resulted in the seizure of 2,100 pieces of clothing carrying counterfeit Disney, Snoopy and Piyo Piyo labels.
