• OBAMA NAMES CUSTOMS CHIEF: President Obama nominated Alan Bersin on Wednesday as commissioner for U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the Department of Homeland Security. Bersin will succeed Ralph Bashem if he is confirmed by Congress. Bersin was assistant secretary for international affairs and special representative for border affairs. He served as the lead representative for Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano for border affairs and Mexico, and dealt with immigration and drug trafficking. Bersin was California’s secretary of education from July 2005 to December 2006, and during the Clinton administration served as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of California.
