PARIS — Four people were taken into custody Thursday morning here in the ongoing Bettencourt affair.

Photographer François-Marie Banier; Patrice de Maistre, Liliane Bettencourt’s financial adviser; Fabrice Goguel, her former lawyer, and Carlos Vejarano, manager of the Arros island in the Seychelles, were being held for questioning by the French national police’s financial investigative arm on allegations of income tax laundering and influence peddling. They can be retained for up to 48 hours.
