Bauer Media has tapped David Perel as editorial director of In Touch and Life & Style. Perel replaces Dan Wakeford, who served as editor in chief of the celebrity entertainment magazines since 2007. The appointment, which is effective immediately, underscores Bauer’s commitment in the digital space, the company said Wednesday.
It also hopefully course corrects large declines in circulation, not to mention newsstand sales for both weekly magazines.
According to Alliance For Audited Media, In Touch shed 270,429 in total paid and verified circulation from 2009 to 20013, when it registered circulation of 525,028. Since it launched in 2009, single copy sales have tumbled 33.8 percent to 493,861 last year. The picture was even grimmer at Life & Style, which saw its total paid and verified circulation fall 43.6 percent since 2009 to last year’s circulation of 270,721. Single copy sales last year totaled 261,953, a 44.3 percent drop since 2009.
Bauer executive vice president Sebastian Raatz said that with Perel at the helm, it would focus more on growing the business via digital advertising and editorial efforts.
“David is an extraordinary editor and we are thrilled to have someone of his caliber join the company, to continue our newsstand success,” said Raatz. “His strong relationships in the entertainment industry as well as his success in developing digital platforms will be invaluable to our business efforts moving forward.”
Most recently, Perel served as the president of Next Act Media Inc. where he specialized in innovative cross-platform solutions for content creation and revenue enhancement. Prior to that he served as the executive vice president of digital content for American Media Inc. where he relaunched RadarOnline.com. Bauer also hired Christopher Yates, a former digital exec from Time Inc., as its vice president of digital.
