Dermalogica named Dan Ginsberg, who led the stratospheric growth of Red Bull North America during a five-year tenure as the energy drink company’s chief executive officer, as ceo, effective Jan. 1.
The Carson, Calif.-based skin care company said Wednesday that Ginsberg will guide expansion as it enters its 25th year in business next year. Dermalogica has been shoring up its executive ranks in the last few years and appointed Jerry Wenker president and chief operating officer in 2007, when husband-and-wife founders and former co-ceo’s Jane and Raymond Wurwand ceded daily operational control.
An experienced executive outside the skin care field, Ginsberg adds managerial and branding heft that could make Dermalogica an attractive acquisition candidate. Jane Wurwand has acknowledged being approached in the past.
Before joining Red Bull in 2002, Ginsberg was chief marketing officer of fast-food chain Hardee’s Food Systems Inc., which was purchased by CKE Restaurants Inc., and co-founded the advertising agency DGWB.
“Branding is my professional passion. My expertise has always been to lead creative teams in generating consumer awareness and brand loyalty,” said Ginsberg. “I’m excited to lead the globally recognized Dermalogica brand to the next chapter of its long-standing history.”
Jane Wurwand said, “Dan Ginsberg is recognized as an innovator and creative strategist across the related disciplines of branding and marketing, and I, for one, am very excited to be planning our future with Dan.”
Dermalogica was growing at a rate of around 20 percent a year prior to the recession, and major beauty players had been feeling out its interest in a sale, but the Wurwands have so far rebuffed entreaties. Dermalogica is estimated by industry sources to generate $100 million-plus in annual revenues and asserts it is the leading professional skin care brand. The privately held company has nine branded concept retail spaces worldwide and sells its products to more than 5,000 professional spas, salons and other skin care outlets.
Etro’s show, titled “The Tree of Life,” was a celebration of the house’s 50th anniversary. “My father founded the company in 1968, which was the year of counterculture and psychedelia. It’s really a show that celebrates that and the paisley design of India and its origin,” said Veronica Etro. #wwdfashion #mfw #ss18 (📷: @delphineachard)
