It was people, rather than products, who were the big winners at the Fragrance Foundation Awards, namely Michael Gould, the former chief executive of Bloomindgale’s, and master perfumer Carlos Benaim. Each man received a standing ovation when presented with an award—Hall of Fame and Perfumer of the Year Lifetime Achievement respectively—and each made certain to in turn thank those who had contributed to their success over the years. “Nobody does it alone,” said Benaim, asking the perfumers in the hall to stand and be recognized, prompting another round of applause. “My success is your success,” said Benaim, “and a piece of this award belongs to you.”
