Funeral services have been held in Massapequa Park, N.Y., for Michael Burkhardt, who died Jan. 8 after a more than six-year-long battle with brain cancer.
Burkhardt was most recently senior account executive at Randa Accessories. A former assistant buyer at Lord & Taylor, at Randa he specialized in neckwear and focused on accounts including Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Boscov’s, Express and Lord & Taylor.
Upon receiving his diagnosis in 2007 and undergoing surgery, he returned to work and commenced blogging about his up-and-down experiences fighting the disease.
“We had a really cool apartment in NYC’s East Village,” he wrote in one blog following his marriage to his wife Eden in 2008. “We were loving life. Almost overnight, I had a seat in my shower and a walker in my apartment.”
His blog entries, always ending with the words “Much Love, Mike,” remain online at michaelburkhardt.com. The last of them was penned on Oct. 13.
As he waged his fight against cancer, he worked when he was able and became a director of Voices Against Brain Cancer. He had a keen interest, shared with followers of his blog, in cancer prevention as well as supplemental therapies that could aid in treatment of the disease.
He is survived by his wife; their twin boys Gavin and Reid; his mother, Catherine Ketcham; his father, Thomas; stepmother Denise Burkhardt; stepfather John Ketcham; a brother, Kyle, and two half-brothers, Jason and Dustin Burkhardt.
