PARIS — A champion of young designers and a beloved fixture on the trade-show scene here, Hortensia de Hutten died on Jan. 23. She was 68.
Born in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, she began a career as a designer for Promostyl, a Paris-based fashion-forecasting firm. In 1993, she created the Workshop trade show, which featured up-and coming designers.
“Our particularity is that we feature designers with strong personal vision,” she told WWD in 2000. "Paris is full of creativity, so you have to find a new take on fashion." Workshop grew in 1997 to include an edition in New York.
In 1998, de Hutton curated the traveling exhibit Créateurs de Passions, which presented 22 young Parisian designers, including Christophe Lemaire and Isabel Marant.
Her additions to the Paris trade-show scene also included Mira, Troisième Etage and The Expressions, three sections devoted to designers inside the sprawling Prêt-à-porter fair.With the fairs and her public relations office, she promoted the work of designers including Marc Le Bihan, Jean-Denis Franoux and Christian Tournafol.
When Workshop came to an end in 2002, the silver-hair woman created another fair, Le Showroom, with a more intimate format. Down the road, she added children’s fashion, which led to the foundation, with her children Marie and Sébastien, of the Playtime trade fair in 2006, which now counts shows in Tokyo and New York.
The funeral is scheduled for Jan. 30 at 2:30 p.m. in the church of Magny en Vexin, outside of Paris.
