Randy Smith and Dennis Brown have been named group presidents in a realignment of executive responsibilities at The NPD Group, the research and advisory firm based in Port Washington, N.Y.
Steve Coffey continues as the organization’s chief research officer but will transition to a more forward-looking role focusing on emerging technology and shifting consumer and retail trends.
Smith, previously group president for U.S. food, automotive, Canada and Latin America, will serve as group president of product management and development and, among other duties, will oversee the research science and advanced analytics teams that previously reported to Coffey.
Brown, who was formerly group president of technology and hardlines, will oversee the commercial teams for all industry sectors, including softlines, in the U.S. as well as the Canadian and Latin American businesses previously overseen by Smith.
Smith and Brown will continue to report to Karyn Schoenbart, president and chief operating officer of NPD, who has added responsibility for information technology and operations. She continues to report to Tod Johnson, chairman and chief executive officer, as will Coffey in his newly configured position.
“Our new organization leverages NPD’s core strength of industry expertise while also positioning us to grow our business through accelerated product innovation and strategic global expansion,” Johnson said.
NPD last year penned an agreement with Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to track its point-of-sale data and expanded its analytics team.

Harrods plans to remove the famous statue of Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed from the bottom of the Egyptian escalators and hand it back to Mohamed Al-Fayed. “We are very proud to have played our role in celebrating the lives of Diana, Princess of Wales and Dodi Al Fayed at Harrods and to have welcomed people from around the world to visit the memorial for the past 20 years,” said Michael Ward, Harrods managing director. “With the announcement of the new official memorial statue to Diana, Princess of Wales at Kensington Palace, we feel that the time is right to return this memorial to Mr. Al Fayed and for the public to be invited to pay their respects at the palace.” More on the news, with reporting by @loreleimarfil, at WWD.com. #wwdnews
