Marlow was president of the Urban Outfitters brand from 2001 to 2010. Under his leadership, the retailer grew to more than $1 billion in revenues, opened more than 100 stores in the U.S., expanded the brand into Canada and Continental Europe, and grew its direct-to-consumer businesses. There are 194 Urban Outfitters stores in the U.S., Canada and Europe. Most recently, Marlow was at the Indigo book chain in Canada, which he left at the end of January.
The Philadelphia-based Urban Outfitters has been trying to reverse a yearlong decline in profits and negative comparable-store sales. In the third quarter ended Oct. 31, the last quarter reported by the company, profits declined 31 percent amid deteriorating margins. Net sales in the quarter increased 6 percent to $610 million, compared with $573.5 million in last year’s third quarter.
Last month, Glen Senk stepped down as ceo of Urban Outfitters Inc. to join David Yurman as ceo, and was succeeded by Hayne, Urban Outfitters’ founder.
