Von Maur has promoted Joy Place to vice president of merchandising, a new position at the 140-year-old, family-owned department store chain.

Place, 37, will be responsible for overseeing product buying for all 27 Von Maur locations and will report to Melody Westendorf, chief operating officer. The Davenport, Iowa-based company said Place’s responsibilities include staying on top of trends, pursuing new vendor relationships and maintaining a team of buyers. All merchandising employees, as well as the advertising and analyst departments, will report to Place.

“With strong sales and merchandising instincts cultivated over her 14 years with Von Maur, Joy is uniquely positioned to deliver the competitive mix of products and brands our customers demand, all while driving meaningful value for our partners,” said Westendorf.

For seven years, Place was general manager of merchandising of all feminine apparel at Von Maur, supervising 20 buyers. She “transformed the company’s mix of feminine apparel, specifically strengthening its distribution in contemporary fashion,” the company said. Von Maur also operates a women’s specialty chain called Dry Goods.
